RIBBON MAIDENS
 - German Version -

Stitching is an old tradition. In my work it gets another kind of value and effect because of the imperfect realization. The cross-and overstitching becomes an own life. Not the stitch itself makes the picture, he vanishes therein, and he is the language, the energy which goes for and back, is wandering, floats, disappears out of the frame.
The images have connection to gone stories, histories, parts of memory, parts of seeming known or unknown.
The theme is ribbon-maidens. In the 20ies or 30ies the girls in Germany were wearing ribbons on Sundays, festivities and especially when there were photos taken. The serie is from a shot of one class about 1925. Each girl carries a special character under her ribbon. You can see “faces of women” therein. The special conditions of making photos in this time had a special effect on the girls. They had to wait long; they were not used to do this. Anger, curiosity, fear, joy, boredom... expresses on their faces. You can guess their experiences of their little life and the coming future of their life as women. In the exhibitions I encourage the women to find themselves in these portraits or – to guess what their mothers would have looked like or if they could have resembled one of these.
It is a series of 20 pictures. Photos printed on canvas, stitched, 29x21cm.
